Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

September 5, 2019 Speaker: Tim Rice Series: Parables of the Kingdom

Passage: Matthew 18:21-35

Memory Verse for the Week: Matthew 18:33-35 (ESV)

33 “And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

Intro: How vital is forgiveness? Especially when you’re doing the forgiving?

A PROFOUND DEBT
What does Jesus reveal about His Father’s mercy to anyone who repents?

HEART IDOLS
What is our fallen instinct in response to being wronged?

LIVE ALONE BY MERCY
How is forgiving this way a second move – an echo?

YOU CAN PRAY WITH US ...

1. Worship the LORD who delights to show mercy and steadfast love! Praise God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit for being willing to completely pardon and cleanse anyone who turns to him in faith and repentance!

2. How have you lived in bitterness or with an unforgiving spirit toward others who harm or disappoint you? Confess your bitterness to Jesus as a violation of His character when He is so free in how He forgives.

3. Give thanks to Jesus for how He bore the costs of your sin and pride. Thank Him for freely giving up His Father’s approval so that we could gain it by His Grace.

4. Who do you know that is bitter or unforgiving? Pray for them asking the Lord to open their eyes to see themselves in light of their true indebtedness to God, and that they’d humble themselves before Him.

5. Ask the Holy Spirit to persuade you that Jesus’ estimate of 10,000 talents is a realistic measure of your debt to God. Ask Him to grow in you such a deep sense of His mercy that you would be eager to forgive others who offend or disappoint you.
